Don't let the title mislead you. This book is not about the futility of self-improvement, but rather about the effortlessness of transformation. The authors, Ariel and Shya Kane, suggest that all we have to do to transform our lives is learn to live in the moment. If we can be in the moment, what they call Instantaneous Transformation occurs naturally. In other words, a miraculous shift in the way one is oriented in the world happens instantaneously, by itself, when one surrenders completely to the present moment.

What's pleasant and refreshing about these assertions is that the authors wisely recognize something greater than human efforts - life itself - as the orchestrator of healing and transformation.

With compassion and humor, the Kanes share some of their personal histories to illustrate how Instantaneous Transformation has occurred in their own lives. Particularly touching is a story Ariel tells about Shya's mother, Ida. This tale of forgiveness illustrates the transformation that takes place when we can glimpse the intelligence that lies beneath another's choices.

In addition to sharing personal experience, the Kanes brilliantly articulate the specific blocks that keep us locked in the past and future, unable to experience the present fully. Perhaps you are familiar with some of them: the need to be right, resisting what is, judging circumstances, or holding on to old ideas. It takes willingness, honesty, courage and maturity to let go of these behaviors! Just so that we don't fall into the trap of "working on" ourselves, again, the authors caution in the preface, "Please don't take this book too seriously!"

Taken lightly, this is a simple, easy-to-read book with a valuable message that can take you "through the swamp of the mind into the clarity and brilliance of the moment."
